Defibrillation

Defibrillators use electrical shocks administered through paddles or patches attached to the chest in order to restore normal heart rhythm and help reverse life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias, such as ventricular fibrillation - one of the leading causes of sudden cardiac arrest. Defibrillation therapy is therefore an essential treatment option.

Defibrillation works best when administered within minutes of the start of ventricular fibrillation. After administering a shock, providers will administer CPR for two minutes while checking whether the person is responsive. If they aren't, further CPR and shocks may be needed; otherwise they may give medications (epinephrine and amiodarone) if required.
