How to Prevent Basic Plumbing Mistakes

Once the DIYs are out and a number of newcomers are in house renovations, so that involves plumbing. Here are some prevention approaches of basic plumbing in order to avoid errors.

Using Teflon Tape

Teflon tape can be correctly installed in the clockwise manner. Installing it incorrectly is by counter clockwise. When the fitting is tightened, it rotates in the other direction. As a result, it will unravel and be removed so instead of sealing it will cause a small leak.

Improper Venting

Plumbing systems need to be properly vented. Similarly with the principle of the straw, wherein the air pushed the liquid up in a straw, waste needs air to circulate properly. If the system is not properly vented, it will suck out the water in the nearest P-trap and let the sewage odour inside the house.

Over-tightening a Fitting

The fits are not made to be over-tightened. Over-tightening may lead to leakage and, in the end, may break the fittings. To prevent this from happening, measure the threads inside the fitting so that you know the limit.

Installing Saddle Valves

Installing a saddle valve in a potable water system is primarily used for humidifiers and refrigerator water lines. They are also prone to leakage and to prevent the pipe from being cut off, then soldering or crimping a tee fitting.

Using Harsh Chemical in Drains

The use of harsh chemicals is the first DIY when drains are unclogged. However, these chemicals are corrosive in nature and can cause long-term damage to the pipes. Initially, try using natural treatments by pouring two parts of vinegar and one part of baking soda in the drain.

Cutting Life Pipe

When cutting a life pipe, ensure that the water is shut-off.  Always be certain that the section being worked on is isolated properly before trying to cut it. Where there is no tap nearby, shut off the main water valve and drain all the water before proceeding with any kind of repair.

Connecting Pipes

There are certain times that water lines transition from the use of steel to copper. Joining these two dissimilar materials together can be wrong because they will corrode and eventually fail and cause water damage. To resolve this, use a di-electric union because the plastic spacer does not allow contact between the steel and the copper. Hence, it inhibits any possible corrosion. You may also use a brass nipple.

Soldering Pipes

When soldering, a corrosive acidic substance called flux is being used. Once applied to the pipes, the flux prevents oxidation. If there are any leftovers, this will cause verdigris, a white, bluish patina or encrustation on the copper pipes that may lead to damaging the pipes. To prevent it, wipe off the excess flux with a clean rag after soldering.

Tightening a Pipe Cutter

Turn the knob of the pipe cutter a quarter turn for each complete rotation. In this way they're not too much force applied on the wheel and it will not result to a deformed pipe or a broken pipe cutter.
